2 Kings 8:25
In the twelfth yeere of Ioram the sonne of Ahab, king of Israel, did Ahaziah, the sonne of Iehoram king of Iudah, begin to reigne. 2 Kings 8:25 (KJV)
Context: Before diving into the verse itself, it is essential to understand the historical setting. At this point in biblical history the united nation had already split into two distinct kingdoms. The northern kingdom, called Israel, had its capital at Samaria, while the southern kingdom, called Judah, retained Jerusalem as its capital. Joram, also known as Jehoram, ruled Israel, and Ahaziah, also known as Jehoahaz, ruled Judah.
The verse notes that Ahaziah became king of Judah in the twelfth year of Joram’s reign in Israel. Joram, the son of Ahab and Jezebel, was an evil king who continued the idolatrous practices introduced by his parents. He reigned for twelve years (2 Kings 3:1), and his reign was marked by warfare, conflicts with neighboring nations, and opposition from various prophets of God.
Ahaziah, the son of Jehoram and Athaliah, began his reign in that same twelfth year. Influenced by his mother Athaliah, who was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, Ahaziah followed the wicked ways of the house of Ahab. His reign lasted only one year (2 Kings 8:26).
Both Joram and Ahaziah were evil kings who did not follow the ways of the Lord. They perpetuated the idolatrous practices of the northern kingdom and continued the sinful legacy of Ahab’s house, leading their reigns to be characterized by rebellion against God and eventual judgment on their kingdoms. Throughout Scripture a consistent pattern emerges: unfaithfulness to God brings severe consequences. The division of the kingdom and the subsequent reigns of idolatrous kings ultimately led to the downfall and exile of both Israel and Judah, reminding believers of the importance of remaining faithful to God and His commandments.
