2 Kings 9:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And the dogges shal eate Iezebel in the portion of Iezreel, and there shal be none to burie her. And he opened the doore, and fled. 2 Kings 9:10 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the narrative of the prophet Elisha sending one of his servants to anoint Jehu as the king of Israel. Jehu was commanded by God to execute judgment upon the wicked King Ahab and his wife, Queen Jezebel.

Historical Background: King Ahab and Jezebel were notorious for leading Israel into idolatry and opposing the worship of the one true God. Jezebel was a Baal worshiper and persecuted the prophets of the Lord. Therefore, God pronounced judgment on them and their descendants.

Symbolism: The prophecy concerning Jezebel’s fate is symbolic of the punishment and downfall of wicked individuals. Dogs eating a person’s body was considered a dishonourable and disgraceful way to die and be treated after death. It signifies the absence of proper burial and the lack of respect or honour.

Divine Judgment: The verse reveals God’s righteous judgment upon Jezebel for her wickedness and oppression. It demonstrates that God keeps His word and does not overlook the actions of the wicked. Jezebel’s death and subsequent treatment by the dogs serve as a visible sign of God’s punishment and the fulfilment of His prophecy.

Application: This passage highlights the consequences of living a life opposed to God’s commands. It serves as a reminder that God sees and judges all actions, both good and evil. It also encourages believers to remain faithful to God and avoid the ways of the wicked. Jezebel’s fate can be seen as a warning against the destructive power of idolatry, manipulation, and cruelty.

Redemption and Mercy: While the prophecy against Jezebel was fulfilled, it is essential to remember that God is also a God of mercy and forgiveness. Throughout the Bible, we see instances where even the wicked are given opportunities for repentance and redemption. This verse should be understood in the context of God’s justice and His desire to see people turn from their evil ways and seek Him.

Conclusion: 2 Kings 9:10 contains the prophecy of God’s judgment upon the wicked Queen Jezebel. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of living a life opposed to God’s commands, underscores the importance of remaining faithful and obedient to God, highlights the righteousness of God’s judgment, and points to the need for repentance and redemption.
