2 Kings 9:25

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

Then said Iehu to Bidkar his captaine, Take vp, and cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Iezreelite: for remember, how that when I and thou rode together after Ahab his father, the Lord laide this burden vpon him: 2 Kings 9:25 (KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Kings 9:25 occurs later in the narrative of Jehu’s reign, following his anointing as king over Israel. God instructed the prophet Elisha to send one of the sons of the prophets to anoint Jehu as the next king. Jehu was appointed to bring judgment upon the house of Ahab and to eradicate Baal worship in Israel.

Jehu’s Mission: In this verse Jehu commands his captain, Bidkar, to cast the body of Jehoram, the son of Ahab, into the portion of the field belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. The command recalls the divine burden that the LORD had laid upon Ahab’s house when Jehu and his companion rode together after Ahab.

Naboth’s Vineyard: The reference to Naboth points back to 1 Kings 21, where Ahab coveted Naboth’s vineyard. Naboth refused to sell his ancestral inheritance, leading Jezebel to falsely accuse him of blasphemy, have him executed, and seize the vineyard. The field mentioned in 9:25 thus symbolizes the fulfillment of that earlier injustice.

God’s Judgment: Jehu reminds Bidkar of the LORD’s pronouncement of punishment on Ahab’s family because of their idolatry and evil deeds. By casting Jehoram’s corpse into Naboth’s field, Jehu acts as the instrument of God’s long‑promised judgment, demonstrating that divine justice is patient yet inevitable.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s justice: The passage highlights that God’s justice ultimately prevails, even when the original sin occurred years earlier.
  • Accountability: Individuals are accountable for their actions, and divine judgment will be executed.
  • Consequences of disobedience: Ahab’s rebellion against God brought far‑reaching repercussions for his descendants, warning believers against following a path contrary to God’s will.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 9:25 portrays the execution of God’s judgment on the house of Ahab through Jehu’s decisive act. It underscores God’s unwavering justice, the necessity of personal accountability, and the serious consequences of persistent disobedience.
