2 Samuel 14:17

Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God will be with thee.

2 Samuel 14:17 (KJV)

This verse comes from a conversation between King David and a wise woman of Tekoa. Joab, David’s commander, sent her to appeal for reconciliation between David and his son Absalom. Absalom had fled after killing his half-brother Amnon, and Joab hoped to move the king toward mercy. The woman’s words were carefully crafted by Joab, who “put words in her mouth” (2 Samuel 14:3).

The woman calls herself the king’s “handmaid,” a humble title that shows her respect and submission. She says the king’s “word” will bring comfort, meaning she trusts his decision. Her highest praise is that David can “discern good and bad” like “an angel of God.” This comparison suggests that the king’s judgment is wise, just, and nearly divine in its perception. She ends by blessing David: “the Lord thy God will be with thee,” tying his wisdom to God’s presence and favor.

The verse reflects the biblical principle that a king’s throne is established through righteousness and that his judgment should be just (Proverbs 16:12). It also shows that wisdom and discernment are gifts from God, and that those who speak what is right are valued by a righteous king (Proverbs 16:13). The woman’s respectful appeal models how to approach authority while acknowledging the leader’s God-given role.

This passage reminds us that wise counsel and a well-spoken word can bring comfort and resolution. Leaders must balance justice with mercy, trusting that God’s presence accompanies decisions made in alignment with His wisdom. When we face difficult choices, especially those involving forgiveness, we should seek godly discernment and speak with humility, as the woman did.

Consider how you speak to those in authority. Do you acknowledge their role while making your request? Also, reflect on your own need for discernment. Like David, you can rely on God’s wisdom to distinguish good from bad, and His presence will be with you as you seek to do what is right.
