And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, Dauids counseller, from his citie, euen from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices: and the conspiracie was strong, for the people encreased continually with Absalom. 2 Samuel 15:12 (KJV)

Context: Before verse 12, Absalom had skillfully garnered support from the people of Israel, winning their favour and subtly undermining David’s authority. Absalom’s strategy involved positioning himself in a place of influence and power, ultimately leading to his rebellion against his father.

Absalom’s Action: In this verse we see Absalom actively working to solidify his conspiracy. He sent for Ahithophel, who was one of David’s counsellors. Ahithophel’s involvement was crucial because he possessed great wisdom and was respected for his counsel. Absalom aimed to bolster his cause by gaining the support and guidance of a trusted advisor of David.

Ahithophel’s Origin: Ahithophel was from Giloh, which was his hometown. This detail emphasises that even someone close to David, who hailed from a different city than David, had joined the rebellion. It highlights the depth of Absalom’s conspiracy and the extent to which he had succeeded in turning people against David.

Sacrifices and Increasing Conspiracy: The verse mentions that Absalom sent for Ahithophel while he offered sacrifices. The sacrifices likely refer to religious ceremonies seeking divine favour or spiritual guidance. While Absalom engaged in these rituals, his conspiracy was growing stronger. The people were increasingly joining Absalom’s cause, swelling the ranks of those supporting his rebellion against David.

Overall: This verse demonstrates the cunning and determination of Absalom as he meticulously planned and executed his conspiracy against King David. It also highlights the growing danger David faced as his own trusted counsellor defected to join Absalom’s cause. The subsequent events in the narrative reveal the consequences of Absalom’s rebellion and David’s eventual return to power. The story serves as a reminder of the complexities of human relationships, the consequences of rebellion and betrayal, and the enduring faithfulness of God even in the face of turmoil.
