2 Samuel 15:28
See, I will tarie in the plaine of the wildernesse, vntill there come word from you to certifie me. 2 Samuel 15:28 (KJV)
To understand the significance of this event, it’s essential to grasp the background. Absalom had successfully garnered support from various influential people and had instigated a rebellion against David. Recognising the grave threat posed by his son, David decided to leave Jerusalem and go into the wilderness to protect himself and his loyal followers.
David expresses his intention to remain in the plain of the wilderness until he receives word from his loyal advisers or messengers. This decision reflects David’s wisdom and caution. He recognised the need to gather information and assess the situation before taking further action, choosing to wait for reliable updates rather than reacting hastily.
By waiting for word from others, David seeks confirmation and affirmation of the right course of action. This demonstrates his humility and reliance on the counsel of his trusted advisers, as well as his dependence on divine guidance. He trusted in the Lord and sought God’s counsel in making critical decisions.
Upon receiving Hushai’s warning in 2 Samuel 17:16 (KJV), which stated, ‘Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him,’ David immediately acted. As recorded in 2 Samuel 17:21‑22, David and his followers crossed the Jordan River without delay. This response demonstrates David’s wisdom and caution, recognizing the need to act swiftly on reliable information rather than wait passively.
This passage encourages believers to seek reliable information and wise counsel when facing challenging circumstances. Instead of making impulsive decisions based on fear or uncertainty, we should take the time to gather accurate news, pray, and wait for divine direction. Proverbs 3:5‑6 advises, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.’ Like David, we can trust that God will provide the necessary guidance and wisdom in our lives.
