2 Samuel 17:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:21

Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it wil come to passe when some of them bee ouerthrowen at the first, that whosoeuer heareth it, wil say, There is a slaughter among the people that followe Absalom. 2 Samuel 17:9 (KJV)

In this verse, Hushai, a loyal counselor to David, is providing strategic advice to Absalom regarding the impending battle against David and his forces. Hushai suggests that they should assume David is hiding in a pit or some other concealed location, and when the initial assault happens, there will be a rumor of a great slaughter among the people who follow Absalom. Here are a few key points and lessons we can draw from this verse:

Strategic Thinking: Hushai’s advice demonstrates his strategic thinking and his ability to anticipate David’s movements. He suggests that instead of directly targeting David, they should focus on creating confusion and fear among David’s supporters. This approach aims to weaken David’s resolve and morale.

Divine Providence: Although Hushai’s advice is strategic, it is essential to recognize that behind the scenes, God’s providence is at work. In the preceding verses, David prays for guidance and asks God to turn the counsel of Ahithophel, Absalom’s advisor, into foolishness (2 Samuel 15:31). God uses Hushai’s advice to fulfill David’s prayer and protect him.

The Danger of Rebellion: Absalom’s rebellion against his father David serves as a cautionary tale. It reveals the consequences of pride, disobedience, and a desire for power. Absalom’s rebellion ultimately leads to his downfall and death, highlighting the importance of honoring authority and seeking God’s will rather than pursuing our own selfish ambitions.

God’s Faithfulness: Throughout the narrative of David and Absalom, we witness God’s faithfulness to David. Despite the challenges and threats he faces, God remains steadfast in His promises and delivers David from his enemies. This serves as a reminder of God’s unwavering faithfulness to His people, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

In summary, 2 Samuel 17:10 provides insight into the strategic advice given to Absalom during his conflict with David. It reminds us of the importance of strategic thinking, God’s providence, the consequences of rebellion, and God’s faithfulness to His people.
