2 Samuel 18:19

Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the Lord hath avenged him of his enemies.

2 Samuel 18:19 (KJV)

This verse comes from the account of Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David. Absalom had gathered an army to take the throne, and a decisive battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok the priest, asks to run and tell David the outcome. His eagerness shows his loyalty and his desire to bring good news to the king.

Ahimaaz says, “the Lord hath avenged him of his enemies.” He does not credit the army or its commanders. He sees the victory as God’s act of justice and deliverance for David, His anointed king. The word “avenged” means God has given David justice against those who rose up against him. Other translations say “vindicated” or “delivered,” but the truth is the same: God fights for His people and brings about their salvation. This is not merely a military success; it is divine deliverance.

Ahimaaz’s role as a messenger is significant. He is the son of a priest, and his service to the king reflects a faithful heart. In the following verses, he persists in his request to run, and he outruns the Cushite messenger. This reminds us of the importance of faithful service and the joy of carrying good news. It also connects to the broader biblical truth that God vindicates His chosen ones, as seen in Psalm 18:47, where David praises God who “avengeth” him.

We can learn from Ahimaaz’s example. He was eager to serve, loyal to his king, and quick to acknowledge God’s hand in victory. In our lives, we should be diligent in our duties, ready to share good news, and careful to give God glory for our successes. We should also communicate clearly and responsibly with those in authority, as Ahimaaz did with David.

This verse encourages us to trust that God is actively involved in the affairs of His people. He brings justice and deliverance in His time. Like Ahimaaz, we can serve with zeal and confidence, knowing that the Lord is the one who fights for us and grants us victory over our enemies.
