2 Samuel 18:28
And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
2 Samuel 18:28 (KJV)
Context
Ahimaaz was the son of Zadok the priest. During Absalom’s rebellion, he served as a loyal messenger to King David. The battle had taken place in the forest of Ephraim, and David waited anxiously for news. Ahimaaz ran to bring word of the outcome, even though carrying such news was dangerous. His devotion to the king remained steady in the middle of conflict.
Meaning
Ahimaaz called out, “All is well.” The Hebrew word behind this phrase means peace, wholeness, and prosperity. It was a complete report of victory for David’s forces. Then Ahimaaz fell to the ground with his face before the king, showing deep respect and honor. He blessed the LORD, David’s God, for delivering up the men who had rebelled. He did not claim credit for the victory but gave praise to God as the true source of deliverance. His words form a doxology, a formal expression of praise, acknowledging that God alone brought success.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the pattern of God defending His anointed king. Throughout David’s life, God rescued him from enemies who rose against him. The doxology “Blessed be the LORD” appears often in Scripture as a formal expression of praise. Ahimaaz’s posture of falling before the king also reflects the proper attitude of worship and humility before God, who is the ultimate King. His example shows that God is sovereign over nations and individuals, actively delivering those He has chosen.
Application
Ahimaaz’s example teaches us to remain faithful in difficult times. He risked his safety to serve the king. We too should stay loyal to our responsibilities, even when circumstances are hard. His words remind us to acknowledge God’s hand in every success. When we experience victory, we should give thanks to God rather than taking pride in our own efforts. His act of bowing shows the importance of honoring those in authority, while his blessing directs our hearts to God. We can follow his pattern by combining humble respect for others with open praise to God.
Reflection
Consider how you respond to God’s deliverance. Do you recognize His work in your life and praise Him openly? Ahimaaz’s confidence in God’s power invites us to trust that God will act on behalf of His people. His loyalty and gratitude are a model for our own walk with God. Let his example encourage you to approach both God and those He has placed over you with humility and thankfulness.
