2 Samuel 22:17

“He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters.”

2 Samuel 22:17 is part of a longer psalm, known as David’s Song of Deliverance or David’s Psalm of Thanksgiving, which is recorded in 2 Samuel 22. This psalm is a poetic expression of David’s gratitude to God for delivering him from the hands of his enemies, particularly Saul and the Philistines.

“He sent from above”: David acknowledges that his deliverance was not the result of his own strength or abilities. Instead, he recognizes that it was God who intervened on his behalf. This phrase emphasizes the heavenly origin of his rescue, attributing it to God’s initiative and sovereignty.

“He took me”: This phrase signifies God’s personal involvement in David’s rescue. It portrays God’s act of reaching out to David, demonstrating His care and concern for him. David recognizes that God took hold of him, indicating God’s intervention in his life.

“He drew me out of many waters”: This metaphorical language conveys the extent of the danger and distress David faced. “Many waters” symbolises overwhelming troubles and difficulties. Just as a person caught in a raging sea is in danger of drowning, David portrays himself as being engulfed by numerous challenges and enemies. However, God, in His mercy, rescued him and drawn him out of these perilous circumstances.

Overall, this verse encapsulates David’s deep gratitude for God’s deliverance. It highlights God’s role as the ultimate source of help and salvation, emphasising His power to lift His people out of the most desperate situations. It also serves as a reminder that God is not distant or uninvolved, but actively cares for and intervenes in the lives of His faithful followers.

David’s Song of Deliverance, including verse 17, serves as an inspiration and encouragement for believers today. It reminds us to place our trust in God during times of trouble and to seek His intervention, knowing that He has the power to rescue us from the metaphorical “waters” that threaten to overwhelm us. It also encourages us to express our gratitude to God when He delivers us from challenging circumstances, just as David did in this psalm.
