2 Samuel 22:36
Thou hast also giuen mee the shield of thy saluation: and thy gentlenesse hath made me great. 2 Samuel 22:36 (KJV)
Context: 2 Samuel 22:36 belongs to the long song of praise and thanksgiving that David composed after the Lord delivered him from the hand of his enemies, especially King Saul. The same song is recorded in Psalm 18, though with a few variations, showing its importance in Israel’s worship.
The Shield of God’s Salvation: In this verse David declares that God has given him “the shield of thy salvation.” A shield is a defensive weapon that protects against attack, and David sees God’s salvation as that protective covering. He understands the shield to guard him not only from physical danger but also to provide spiritual deliverance and ongoing protection. The imagery conveys that every victory over his foes is secured by God’s saving power.
The Gentleness of God: David also attributes his greatness to “thy gentleness.” The word translated “gentleness” can also be rendered “humility,” “condescension,” “mercy,” “compassion,” or “tenderness.” All of these nuances point to a God who is tender‑hearted and compassionate toward his servant. David recognises that this compassionate character of God is the source of his exalted position.
Despite David’s flaws and mistakes, the passage affirms that God’s merciful and gracious nature lifts him up and makes him great. The verse therefore celebrates both God’s protective salvation and His gentle, compassionate disposition, reminding believers that true greatness comes from reliance on God’s saving shield and from experiencing His tender mercy.
