Listen to this article

And after him was Eleazar the sonne of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mightie men with Dauid, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battell, and the men of Israel were gone away. 2 Samuel 23:9 (KJV)

Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite is identified in this verse as one of David’s three mighty men. When the Philistines gathered for battle, Eleazar went down and smote them, and the LORD delivered them into his hand. The verse also records that the men of Israel were gone away at that moment.

This passage belongs to the final chapter of 2 Samuel, often regarded as David’s last words and a record of the exploits of his most valiant warriors. The chapter lists David’s mighty men, emphasizing their loyalty, bravery, and devotion to the king and to Israel. Their deeds illustrate the nation’s reliance on courageous leaders who trusted God in the face of overwhelming odds.

Eleazar’s specific act stands out because he fought alone while the Israelite forces had withdrawn. According to the longer tradition, he arose and smote the Philistines until his hand grew weary, even clinging his hand to the sword, and the LORD wrought a great victory that day. The people returned after him only to take spoil. Whether the text explicitly mentions a withdrawal or not, Eleazar’s steadfastness is clear.

His actions demonstrate unwavering faith, loyalty to David, and confidence in God’s strength. By refusing to surrender, Eleazar embodies the principle of standing firm amid adversity, offering a model for believers who face spiritual or physical opposition. His courage encourages Christians to remain faithful and steadfast in devotion to God, even when surrounded by overwhelming challenges.

The narrative also invites a broader theological reflection. Eleazar’s solitary stand against the Philistines can be seen as a foreshadowing of Christ’s solitary sacrifice on the cross, where Jesus endured suffering and overcame the forces of sin and death. In this way, Eleazar’s story points forward to the redemptive work of Christ and the salvation offered through Him.

In summary, 2 Samuel 23:9 records Eleazar’s heroic deed against the Philistines, highlighting his bravery, faith, and reliance on divine deliverance. The passage underscores the importance of steadfastness, inspires believers to trust God in trials, and subtly anticipates the ultimate example of courage and sacrifice found in Jesus Christ.
