2 Samuel 3:11

Posted on 26 Jan at 17:21

And he could not answere Abner a word againe, because he feared him. 2 Samuel 3:11 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the narrative in the book of 2 Samuel that describes the events following the death of Saul, the first king of Israel. David, who had been anointed as the future king by the prophet Samuel, had been ruling over the tribe of Judah while Saul’s son, Ish-bosheth, reigned over the rest of Israel. Abner, the commander of Saul’s army, was a key figure in supporting Ish-bosheth’s reign.

Bible Study:

Fear as a hindrance: In this verse, we see Ish-bosheth’s fear preventing him from responding to Abner. Fear can paralyze and hinder us from taking action or speaking up when necessary. It is essential to recognize the role fear plays in our lives and seek God’s help to overcome it. Ish-bosheth’s fear of Abner stemmed from their tense relationship after Abner confronted him about loyalty and his threat to transfer allegiance to David.

Trusting in God’s sovereignty: Despite Ish-bosheth’s fear, it is crucial to remember that God had chosen David to be king of Israel. Ish-bosheth’s fear of Abner did not change God’s plan or alter His sovereignty. Similarly, we should trust in God’s sovereignty and purpose for our lives, knowing that He is in control even in the face of intimidating circumstances.

Courage through reliance on God: While fear may hinder us, God provides us with courage to face our fears. Ish-bosheth, in this moment, failed to demonstrate courage, but the broader biblical narrative shows that reliance on God strengthens us. This verse serves as a reminder that even those in positions of authority can falter due to fear. However, we can find strength and courage in the Lord by relying on His promises and seeking His guidance through prayer and the study of His Word.

Seeking wisdom and discernment: Ish-bosheth’s silence in response to Abner’s words may have been an act of wisdom and discernment. It is vital to choose our words carefully and not engage in unnecessary arguments or conflicts. Silence can sometimes be a wise response, allowing time for reflection and seeking God’s guidance before responding.

Application in our lives: This verse reminds us to examine our own lives and consider the areas where fear may be hindering us from fulfilling God’s purposes. It encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty, seek His wisdom, and rely on His strength to overcome our fears. Furthermore, it serves as a reminder that sometimes, in certain situations, silence and discernment are wiser choices than engaging in unproductive arguments. Overall, 2 Samuel 3:11 challenges us to confront our fears, trust in God’s sovereignty, seek His wisdom, and find courage in His promises. By doing so, we can overcome obstacles and fulfill our calling in the Lord’s service.
