2 Samuel 5:10

And David went on, and grew great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him.

2 Samuel 5:10 (KJV)

After Saul’s death, David was first anointed king over Judah at Hebron (2 Samuel 2:4). Later, all the tribes of Israel came to Hebron and anointed him king over the whole nation. In 2 Samuel 5, David captured Jerusalem, also called Zion, and made it his royal city. This verse closes that account, showing that David’s rise was not accidental but part of God’s plan for Israel. The capture of Zion was a practical victory, and it established David’s reign in a way that all the tribes could see.

The phrase “went on” points to steady, continual progress. David did not become great in one moment; his growth was ongoing and sustained. The word “great” describes his increasing power, influence, and honour as king. Yet the verse gives the true reason: “the Lord God of hosts was with him.” The title “Lord of hosts” means God commands the armies of heaven. It declares His absolute sovereignty over every power on earth. David’s success came from God’s presence, not from his own skill alone. This title also reminds us that God is not distant; He is actively involved in the affairs of His people.

The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 11:9 repeats the same truth: “So David waxed greater and greater: for the Lord of hosts was with him.” Both passages agree that God’s presence was the source of David’s greatness. This connection confirms that the biblical writers understood David’s rise as a direct result of divine favour, not mere human achievement. David’s journey from shepherd to warrior to king demonstrates God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. The same God who guided David through battles and trials also guided him to the throne.

This verse teaches that true success and growth come from God. When we trust Him, seek His guidance, and walk in obedience, He can empower us in our own areas of influence. God’s presence can accompany us regardless of our starting point or the challenges we face. We should also remember that our achievements are not solely our own doing. They are tied to God’s grace and guidance. This truth humbles us and leads us to give Him credit and glory for every good result. When we recognise that God is with us, we can face difficulties with confidence, knowing that His power is greater than any obstacle.

David began as a shepherd, became a warrior, and finally sat on the throne. His journey shows God’s faithfulness in fulfilling promises. The same God who was with David is with His people today. When we align our lives with His purposes, we can experience His support in practical ways, just as David did in capturing Jerusalem. Our growth may be slower or less visible, but it is still sustained by the Lord of hosts. Let us acknowledge His hand in our progress and rely on His presence each day. True greatness is not measured by human standards but by our dependence on the One who holds all power.
