2 Samuel 6:19
And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
2 Samuel 6:19 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of King David bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. Earlier, David’s first attempt to move the Ark failed, and it was placed in the house of Obed-Edom. When David saw that the LORD blessed Obed-Edom’s household because of the Ark, he resumed the task and brought it to Jerusalem with sacrifices and rejoicing. After offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, David blessed the people in the name of the LORD.
Meaning
David then gave food to every person in the vast assembly, both men and women. The KJV lists three items: a cake of bread, a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. The Hebrew term for the third item likely refers to a cake of pressed raisins, not wine, though some versions interpret it as a bottle of wine. These were not small tokens but substantial provisions, showing royal generosity that mirrored God’s abundant blessing.
David’s act was generous and inclusive, reaching the entire multitude of Israel with no distinction of gender or status. His distribution expressed joy and gratitude for the Ark’s arrival, and it emphasized the communal nature of worship. The people then departed to their homes, satisfied and blessed.
Biblical connections
This event points to the greater blessings that come through God’s presence among His people. The Ark symbolized God’s presence, and David’s generosity reflected the joy of that presence. Ultimately, this is fulfilled in Christ, who gives Himself as the bread of life and provides for all who come to Him.
Application
This verse encourages us to consider our own attitude towards generosity, inclusiveness, and celebration in worship and community life. It reminds us to be mindful of the needs and well-being of others, regardless of their background or status. We should strive to create an atmosphere of unity and inclusiveness, where all can participate and feel valued.
David’s example shows that worship of God naturally overflows into practical care for others. His generosity brought the whole multitude together, creating a sense of togetherness and shared experience. We are called to reflect this same spirit, ensuring that all people feel valued and included in the celebration of God’s presence.
Reflection
Consider how your own worship and gratitude for God’s presence can become practical care for others. David did not keep the joy of the Ark to himself; he shared it with every person. In the same way, our joy in the Lord should move us to give generously and to welcome all people into the community of faith.
