2 Samuel 6:23

Listen to this article

“Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.”

Context:In this verse, we find the account of King David’s bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. As the Ark was being brought back, David danced before the Lord with all his might, causing Michal, his wife and daughter of King Saul, to despise him. Michal criticized David’s behaviour, and as a result, she was cursed with barrenness and remained childless until her death.

Key Points and Lessons:

Reverence for God’s presence:The Ark of the Covenant symbolised God’s presence among His people. David’s enthusiasm and joy in bringing the Ark to Jerusalem expressed his reverence and love for God. It teaches us the importance of acknowledging and honouring God’s presence in our lives. We should approach Him with reverence and joy, offering Him our heartfelt worship.

The cost of despising godly acts:Michal despised David’s passionate worship before God. Her criticism revealed a lack of understanding and respect for God’s ordained authority. As a result, she faced the consequence of barrenness. This serves as a reminder that we should not despise or mock godly acts or those who are passionately seeking God’s presence.

The importance of obedience:God had given specific instructions regarding the handling of the Ark, and David followed them accordingly. Obedience to God’s commands is vital in our relationship with Him. It demonstrates our trust in His wisdom and authority. Similarly, we should seek to obey God’s Word and honour His instructions, even when they may seem unconventional or different from societal norms.

Consequences of dishonouring God:Michal’s barrenness can be seen as a consequence of her dishonouring God’s appointed king and the Ark of the Covenant. This serves as a reminder that disrespecting God and His representatives can have serious repercussions in our lives. We should strive to honour God and His chosen leaders, trusting that God will deal with any injustices in His own time and way.

God’s sovereignty and justice:While the consequences faced by Michal may seem harsh, it is important to remember that God is just and His ways are beyond our understanding. He has the right to administer blessings and consequences according to His wisdom and purposes. We should trust in His sovereignty and rely on His judgment, even when we don’t fully grasp the reasons behind His actions.

Application:The account of Michal’s barrenness in 2 Samuel 6:23 challenges us to examine our attitudes toward God’s presence and His appointed leaders. It reminds us of the importance of reverence, obedience, and honouring God in our worship and daily lives. We should seek to avoid despising or mocking godly acts and individuals, understanding that God is the ultimate judge and will hold each person accountable for their actions. Let us approach God with reverence, obey His Word, and honour His appointed authorities, trusting in His sovereignty and justice.

Note: While this study provides insights into the passage, it’s always valuable to further explore the context, consult commentaries, and engage in personal reflection to gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures.
