2 Samuel 7:11

Posted on 27 Jan at 11:28

And as since the time that I commanded Iudges to bee ouer my people Israel, and haue caused thee to rest from all thine enemies:) Also the Lord telleth thee, that he will make thee an house. 2 Samuel 7:11 (KJV)

Certainly! Let’s delve into a Bible study on 2 Samuel 7:11 in the King James Version (KJV). The verse reads as follows: ‘Also, the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee a house.’ “And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.” This verse is part of a significant conversation between God and King David, where God makes a covenant with David and promises to establish his dynasty. Let’s explore the context and deeper meaning of this verse.

Context: The passage begins in 2 Samuel 7:1, where King David expresses his desire to build a house, a permanent dwelling place, for the Ark of the Covenant. However, God speaks to the prophet Nathan and instructs him to relay a message to David. In this message, God assures David of His faithfulness and reveals His plans for the future.

Meaning:

Time of Rest: God reminds David of the time He had commanded judges to rule over Israel, which brought peace and rest from their enemies. This refers to the period of settling in the Promised Land and the time of the Judges before the establishment of the monarchy. God acknowledges the struggles Israel faced and the rest He provided during David’s reign.

Building a House: While David wanted to build a physical house (temple) for God, God responds by saying that He will build a house (a dynasty) for David. God promises to raise up a descendant of David who will establish an everlasting kingdom. This foreshadows the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would be a direct descendant of David and establish an eternal kingdom.

Covenant with David: God’s promise to establish David’s dynasty is part of the Davidic Covenant, which is a pivotal covenant in the Old Testament. It ensures the continuation of David’s lineage and promises that one of his descendants will always sit on the throne. This covenant is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who is called the Son of David and reigns as the eternal King.

Spiritual house: The word house in this verse has a dual meaning. While it initially refers to a physical lineage, it also points to the spiritual house of God. In the New Testament, believers are referred to as the house of God or the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16). Through Jesus Christ, all believers become part of God’s spiritual house and share in the blessings of the Davidic Covenant.

Lessons:

God’s Faithfulness: The verse highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Despite David’s desire to build a temple, God reveals a greater plan that extends beyond a physical structure. God’s promises are sure and trustworthy.

Eternal Kingdom: This verse points to the eternal nature of God’s kingdom. Through Jesus Christ, believers become part of God’s everlasting dynasty, enjoying the blessings of salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life.

Our Spiritual Identity: As believers, we are part of God’s spiritual house. Just as God promised to establish a dynasty for David, He has also adopted us into His family through Jesus Christ, making us heirs of His kingdom.
