2 Samuel 8:10

Posted on 27 Jan at 11:38

Then Toi sent Ioram his sonne vnto king Dauid to salute him, and to blesse him, because hee had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: (for Hadadezer had warres with Toi) and Ioram brought with him vessels of siluer, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brasse; 2 Samuel 8:10 (KJV)

2 Samuel 8 describes the victorious military campaigns of King David. In this particular verse, we see a gesture of goodwill from Toi, the king of Hamath, toward David.

Toi, upon hearing of David’s victory over Hadadezer, sent his son Joram to convey his greetings and blessings to David. The sending of a representative with gifts was a customary way of expressing honor and respect. Toi acknowledges David’s military success against Hadadezer, who had been engaged in wars with Toi’s kingdom. David’s victory was not only significant for his own kingdom but also had wider implications in the region.

Joram brought with him vessels made of silver, gold, and brass. These vessels are seen as symbols of wealth, prestige, and honour. Toi’s gesture of sending valuable gifts expressed his appreciation for David’s achievements and marked a sign of the alliance between their kingdoms.

David’s victories were not solely a result of his military prowess but were ultimately attributed to God’s guidance and favour. We can learn from this verse to acknowledge and give credit to God for our successes and achievements in life. Toi’s gesture of sending his son to bless David serves as a reminder of the importance of honouring and encouraging one another. As Christians, we should be quick to express appreciation and blessings to others for their accomplishments and acts of service.

The alliance formed between David and Toi illustrates the value of establishing peaceful relationships with neighbouring kingdoms. Similarly, as believers, we should seek unity and cooperation with fellow Christians, supporting and uplifting one another in faith. Toi’s gifts of valuable vessels demonstrate a spirit of generosity. As Christians, we are called to be generous in our giving, sharing our resources and blessings with others.

Overall, this verse highlights David’s military success, Toi’s acknowledgement of David’s achievements, and the significance of building alliances and expressing honour. It also reminds us of the importance of recognising God’s hand in our victories and practising generosity and blessings towards others.
