2 Thessalonians 3:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:42
Listen to this article

“For even when we were with you, we gave you this command, That if any would not work, neither should he eat.”

Context:The book of 2 Thessalonians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Thessalonica, a city in ancient Macedonia. In this particular verse, Paul addresses the issue of idleness among some members of the church.

Understanding the verse:

  • “Not because we have not power”:Paul asserts that he and his fellow apostles had the authority and power to assert their rights and receive support from the Thessalonian church. As apostles, they were entitled to financial support from the churches they ministered to (1 Corinthians 9:14). However, Paul chose not to exercise this right in Thessalonica.
  • “But to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us”:Paul’s purpose in not accepting support from the Thessalonians was to set an example for them to follow. By working to support themselves, Paul and his companions wanted to demonstrate the value and importance of personal responsibility, industry, and avoiding idleness. They desired to be a positive model for the believers in Thessalonica, encouraging them to imitate their diligent work ethic.
  • Key lessons from 2 Thessalonians 3:9:
  • The importance of personal responsibility:Paul’s decision to work and support himself demonstrates the importance of taking personal responsibility for one’s life and not relying solely on others. This principle extends beyond financial matters and emphasizes the need for believers to be responsible in various aspects of life, including work, relationships, and spiritual growth.
  • Setting a godly example:Paul’s intention was to serve as an example for the Thessalonians. As Christians, our lives should reflect the character of Christ, and we should strive to be positive examples in our behaviour, work ethic, and attitudes. Others should be able to look at our lives and find inspiration to follow in our footsteps.
  • Diligence and avoiding idleness:Paul’s emphasis on the importance of work and avoiding idleness highlights the value of diligence. God calls us to use our time and abilities wisely, being productive in our work and avoiding a lazy or slothful lifestyle. Diligence honours God, contributes to our well‑being, and enables us to be a blessing to others.

Application:

  • Embrace personal responsibility:Take ownership of your life, choices, and actions. Avoid the mentality of relying on others for everything and cultivate a sense of personal responsibility in all areas of life.
  • Be a godly example:Strive to live a life that reflects the character of Christ. Be mindful of your actions, attitudes, and words, as they can influence and impact those around you.
  • Cultivate diligence:Develop a strong work ethic, whether it’s in your occupation, studies, relationships, or spiritual growth. Avoid idleness and laziness, and approach your responsibilities with diligence and excellence.

By studying and applying the principles found in 2 Thessalonians 3:9, we can grow in our personal responsibility, set a godly example, and cultivate diligence in all areas of our lives.
