For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Context
Paul wrote 2 Timothy from prison, facing imminent death, to his beloved spiritual son Timothy. In this verse, Paul speaks of suffering “for the which cause”—the cause of the Gospel, which included his role as a preacher, apostle, and teacher of the Gentiles. Despite persecution and hardship, Paul declares he is not ashamed.
Meaning
Paul’s confidence rests not in his circumstances but in personal knowledge: “I know whom I have believed.” This is not mere intellectual assent but a deep, relational trust in Jesus Christ. Paul is “persuaded”—fully convinced—that God is able to “keep” (guard, protect) that which Paul has “committed unto him.” The Greek term underlying “committed” refers to a deposit, something entrusted to another for safekeeping. Paul has deposited his life, his ministry, and his future into God’s care.
The phrase “against that day” points to the day of Christ’s return and final judgment. Paul’s assurance is not limited to present circumstances but extends to eternity. He is certain that God will guard his deposit until that final day.
