Listen to this article

“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

This verse is found in Paul’s second letter to Timothy, where he encourages Timothy in his ministry and instructs him on how to be a faithful servant of God. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning.

“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure”: Paul begins by emphasizing the unshakeable nature of God’s foundation. This foundation refers to the solid truth and promises of God’s Word, which remain firm and reliable. It signifies the unchanging nature of God and His faithfulness to His people.

“Having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his”: The phrase “having this seal” suggests that the foundation of God is marked or authenticated by a seal. This seal signifies God’s ownership and knowledge of those who belong to Him. God intimately knows and recognizes those who are genuinely His. It highlights the personal relationship between God and His people, demonstrating His care and protection over them.

“Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity”: This part of the verse instructs believers in their response to God’s ownership. It calls for a commitment to a life of holiness and righteousness. Those who profess the name of Christ are called to actively turn away from sin and live according to God’s standards. It emphasizes the importance of personal transformation and a departure from sinful behavior.

Overall, 2 Timothy 2:19 encourages believers to stand firm on the foundation of God’s unchanging truth and promises. It reminds us of God’s personal knowledge and care for His people and emphasizes the need for a life characterized by holiness and obedience to Christ. This verse serves as a reminder of the secure and transformative relationship believers have with God through Jesus Christ.
