Genesis 36:13

And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife.

Genesis 36:13 (KJV)

Genesis 36 records the descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob, later named Israel. This chapter traces Esau’s family line, showing how his offspring multiplied and formed the nation of Edom. The verse names Reuel as one of Esau’s sons, making him a grandson of Isaac and a great-grandson of Abraham. His place in the genealogy confirms the growth of Esau’s household.

The verse lists Reuel’s four sons: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. Scripture gives no further details about these men, but their names are preserved. Bashemath, Esau’s wife, is identified as their mother. She is also named in Genesis 36:2 as the daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth. This connection links the families of Isaac and Ishmael, showing that Abraham’s descendants remained interrelated.

God promised Abraham that his descendants would become many nations. This genealogy shows that promise extending even through Esau. Later, in Genesis 36:17, these same sons appear as tribal leaders, called dukes, in Edom. Their rise to prominence fulfills the blessing Isaac gave Esau in Genesis 27:39-40, that he would live by the sword and dwell away from the richness of the earth.

God cares about every family line, not only the main branch of promise through Jacob. The careful recording of names teaches that each person matters to Him. Believers can trust that their own lives, even when unnoticed by history, are known and valued by God.

These names remind us that God works through ordinary families and generations. His purposes unfold through people whose stories are not fully told. This should encourage humility and gratitude, knowing that our place in God’s plan is secure, even when we do not see the full picture.
