Genesis 36:17

And these are the sons of Reuel Esau’s son; duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah: these are the dukes that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife.

Genesis 36:17 (KJV)

Genesis 36 records the family line of Esau, also called Edom. This verse names the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son through Bashemath. These sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. Each held the title of duke, meaning a tribal or clan leader. Their leadership was in the land of Edom, showing that Esau’s descendants formed an organized society.

The word “duke” points to authority and prominence. These four men led their families and held influence in Edom. The verse also identifies Bashemath as Esau’s wife, making these men her grandsons. The text connects the family line to both Reuel and Bashemath, emphasizing the importance of both parents in the record.

This genealogy shows the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham that he would become the father of many nations. Esau’s descendants became a distinct people, the Edomites. God’s purposes extended beyond Jacob’s line to include the broader family of Abraham. The record also reminds us that God values every family line and works through generations.

This verse teaches that God sees and cares for each person and family. Even when names appear only in a list, they matter to Him. Believers can trust that their own family history is not forgotten. God is sovereign over all human history, and He works through ordinary people and their descendants.

Consider how God has worked through your own family line. The dukes of Edom are remembered because God recorded their names. Your life also has meaning in God’s plan, even when it seems small. Let this verse encourage you to value your heritage and trust God’s purposes for your family.
