Genesis 39:3

Listen to this article

“And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.”

Context:In Genesis 39, we find the story of Joseph, one of Jacob’s twelve sons. Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and ended up in Egypt. In this verse, Joseph had been sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard. Despite being in a difficult situation, God’s presence and favour were evident in Joseph’s life.

The LORD was with him:One of the key aspects of Joseph’s life was the presence of the Lord. Although Joseph was separated from his family, he had a deep relationship with God. This relationship sustained him and provided him with strength, wisdom, and favour. It is important to recognize that God’s presence is not dependent on our circumstances. Even in challenging times, God can be with us and work through us.

The LORD made all that he did to prosper:Another significant aspect of this verse is that whatever Joseph did, God made it prosper. Joseph’s integrity, diligence, and God-given abilities were evident in his work. Whether it was managing Potiphar’s household or later overseeing the affairs of Egypt, Joseph’s actions brought success and prosperity. This highlights the principle that when we align ourselves with God’s will, He blesses our efforts.

Application:The story of Joseph teaches us several lessons:

  • God’s presence brings favour:Just as the Lord was with Joseph, we can experience His presence in our lives. As believers, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, guiding, comforting, and empowering us. When we acknowledge God’s presence and seek Him earnestly, we can experience His favour in our endeavours.
  • Faithfulness in all circumstances:Joseph’s faithfulness in slavery and later in prison set an example for us. Regardless of our circumstances, we are called to remain faithful to God and to act with integrity. Our faithfulness in the small things can lead to greater responsibilities and blessings in the future.
  • God’s blessing on our work:When we commit our work to the Lord and diligently carry out our responsibilities, He can cause our efforts to prosper. This doesn’t mean we won’t face challenges or setbacks, but ultimately, God can bring about success and fruitfulness.
  • Trusting in God’s sovereignty:Joseph’s story is a testament to God’s sovereignty. Despite the hardships and setbacks Joseph faced, God used them to position him for a greater purpose. Joseph eventually became a key leader in Egypt and was instrumental in saving his family during a severe famine. We can trust that God’s plans for our lives are ultimately for our good, even when we don’t understand His ways.

In conclusion, Genesis 39:3 highlights Joseph’s faithfulness, God’s presence, and the prospering of Joseph’s work. It encourages us to seek God’s presence in all circumstances, remain faithful, trust in His sovereignty, and commit our work to Him, knowing that He can bring about success and blessings in our lives.
