Genesis 39:2

Listen to this article

And the LORD was with Ioseph, and hee was a prosperous man, and hee was in the house of his master the Egyptian. Genesis 39:2 (KJV)

In this verse we see a significant turning point in the life of Joseph. To better understand the context, let us recall that Joseph, the son of Jacob, was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt. There he was purchased by Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard. Despite the challenging circumstances, the Bible tells us that the Lord was with Joseph, and this divine presence had a profound impact on his life.

The Lord was with Joseph: This phrase signifies that Joseph enjoyed a close and intimate relationship with God. Even though he was far from his family and endured difficult circumstances, Joseph found solace and strength in the presence of the Lord. That companionship not only comforted him but also guided his actions and decisions.

Joseph was a prosperous man: Although he was a slave, Joseph experienced remarkable success and prosperity in Potiphar’s house. The favour of the Lord upon Joseph’s life enabled him to excel in all he did. His skill, integrity, and dedication caught Potiphar’s attention, leading to Joseph’s elevation within the household and the trust of great responsibility.

Joseph was in the house of his master: This emphasizes Joseph’s position within Potiphar’s household. While still a servant, he was entrusted with significant responsibilities and even authority over the affairs of his master. His character, diligence, and trustworthiness caused Potiphar to place him in a position of great trust.

The verse highlights an important principle found throughout Scripture: when we remain faithful to God, even in challenging circumstances, He is with us and can bring prosperity and success into our lives. Joseph’s story serves as a powerful reminder that, regardless of our circumstances, we can find strength, hope, and favour through our relationship with God.

By studying Joseph’s life we learn valuable lessons about integrity, perseverance, and the importance of maintaining a strong connection with God. Joseph’s unwavering faith and reliance on God ultimately led him to a position of influence and fulfilled God’s purposes in his life.

As we reflect on Genesis 39:2, may it encourage us to seek the presence of the Lord, trust in His guidance, and remain faithful in all circumstances, knowing that He can bring blessings even in the most unlikely situations.
