Genesis 46:4

Listen to this article

“I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.”

Genesis 46:4 is part of the account of Jacob’s journey to Egypt with his entire family. This verse contains God’s reassurance to Jacob, also known as Israel, as he prepares to leave the land of Canaan and go down to Egypt to reunite with his son Joseph.

“I will go down with thee into Egypt”: This statement signifies God’s presence and guidance. God promises to accompany Jacob on his journey to Egypt, assuring him that he will not be alone. This promise highlights God’s faithfulness and the assurance that His presence would be with Jacob and his descendants.

“I will also surely bring thee up again”: God not only assures Jacob of His presence in Egypt but also promises to bring him back. This foreshadows the eventual liberation of the Israelites from Egypt, led by Moses, centuries later. It demonstrates God’s foresight and His commitment to fulfilling His promises to the patriarchs.

“Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes”: This phrase is symbolic and indicates a final act of care and respect. It refers to Joseph being present at Jacob’s deathbed and closing his eyes after he passes away. It speaks to the deep bond between father and son, as well as the fulfillment of the earlier prophecy regarding Joseph’s rise to a position of authority and prominence.

Genesis 46:4 provides comfort to Jacob as he embarks on a new chapter of his life in Egypt. God’s assurance of His presence, promise of eventual return, and acknowledgment of the special relationship between Jacob and Joseph provide reassurance and establish a sense of continuity in the unfolding narrative of God’s plan for the nation of Israel.
