Genesis 46:4

I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.

Genesis 46:4 (KJV)

Jacob, also called Israel, stands at Beersheba before leaving Canaan with his whole family. God speaks to him in a vision and tells him not to fear the journey to Egypt (Genesis 46:1-4). This verse is the heart of that promise, given when Jacob is old and about to enter a foreign land.

“I will go down with thee into Egypt” declares that God Himself will accompany Jacob. The Hebrew wording stresses God’s personal commitment; he will not send Jacob alone. This assures Jacob that divine presence and guidance will continue even outside the Promised Land.

“I will also surely bring thee up again” promises a future return. The double wording makes the promise certain. It points first to Jacob’s burial in Canaan, when his body is carried back and placed in the Cave of Machpelah (Genesis 50:13). It also foreshadows the Exodus, when God brings the whole nation up out of Egypt under Moses. God’s long-range plan reaches far beyond one man’s lifetime.

“Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes” is a tender image of Joseph closing his father’s eyes at death. It assures Jacob that he will not die alone and that his beloved son will be present. This also confirms that Joseph’s rise to power, foretold earlier, has truly happened.

The promise of return links directly to the Exodus, showing that God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob continues through history. The same God who goes down with Jacob will later go down to rescue his descendants.

God’s people can face major transitions without fear. He promises to be with them in unfamiliar places, to remain faithful to his word, and to provide comfort even at the end of life. These three assurances give peace in every season.

God’s presence, his faithful promises, and the care of loved ones all work together for his people. Trust him to go with you, to bring you through, and to sustain you to the end.
