Genesis 46:10

Listen to this article

“And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.”

Genesis 46:10 is part of the genealogy of Jacob’s family as they journeyed to Egypt during a time of famine. It provides a list of Jacob’s descendants, specifically the sons of Simeon.

Simeon:Simeon was the second son of Jacob and Leah. His name means heard or he who hears. In the previous chapter, we see that Simeon and his brother Levi avenged the rape of their sister Dinah by deceiving and killing the men of Shechem. Simeon’s descendants are mentioned in this verse.

Jemuel:Jemuel, also known as Nemuel, was the firstborn son of Simeon. His name means day of God or whom God day appoints. Not much else is known about him from the biblical account.

Jamin:Jamin was the second son of Simeon. His name means right hand or son of the right hand. Like Jemuel, not much is known about him beyond this genealogical listing.

Ohad:Ohad was the third son of Simeon. His name means united or joining together. Again, the Bible does not provide much additional information about him.

Jachin:Jachin was the fourth son of Simeon. His name means He establishes or He will establish. Similar to the previous sons, there is limited information available about Jachin apart from his name.

Zohar:Zohar was the fifth son of Simeon. His name means splendor or brightness. There is no additional information about Zohar’s life or significance.

Shaul:Shaul was the sixth son of Simeon. His name means asked or desired. It is worth noting that Shaul is mentioned as the son of a Canaanitish woman, which distinguishes him from his brothers who were born to Leah.

This verse primarily serves as a record of the descendants of Simeon and provides us with a glimpse into the names of his sons. While there isn’t much known about these individuals beyond their names, their inclusion in the genealogy of Jacob’s family highlights the fulfillment of God’s promise to multiply Jacob’s descendants and build a great nation.

This verse reminds us of the importance of recognizing and valuing each person’s unique identity and lineage. It also reflects God’s faithfulness to His promises, as He continued to bless and increase Jacob’s family even during their time of relocation to Egypt.

Overall, Genesis 46:10 provides a snapshot of Simeon’s descendants and emphasizes the ongoing fulfillment of God’s covenant with Jacob.
