Exodus 5:8

And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

Exodus 5:8 (KJV)

Moses and Aaron, at God’s command, asked Pharaoh to let Israel go into the wilderness to worship Him (Exodus 5:1-3). Pharaoh refused, accusing the people of idleness. In this verse, he orders that the full quota of bricks remain unchanged, even though he has stopped supplying straw. The phrase “the tale of the bricks” means the daily number of bricks required. By keeping the quota and removing straw, Pharaoh makes the work far harder.

Pharaoh’s charge that the Israelites are “idle” is a false pretext. Their request to sacrifice is a legitimate act of worship. The king’s response reveals his hardness of heart and his rejection of the God of Israel. He intensifies suffering instead of acknowledging the true reason for their plea. His accusation is not based on fact but on a desire to dismiss their devotion.

This moment sets the stage for the plagues and the deliverance of Israel. It shows the conflict between Egypt’s power and God’s kingdom. The world’s system often answers God’s call with greater opposition, yet God sees the affliction of His people and will act in His time. The oppression here is not random; it is a direct response to the first request for freedom to worship.

Obedience to God does not always bring immediate relief. Moses and Aaron followed His command, yet the people suffered more. Believers may face hardship and false accusations when they choose to follow God. Perseverance means continuing to cry out to Him, trusting that He is aware and will fulfill His promises. Do not let discouragement take root when the path becomes harder.

When obedience leads to temporary difficulty, remember that God’s plan is greater than present trials. He is faithful to deliver those who trust in Him, ultimately through Christ. The same God who heard Israel’s cry hears yours today.
