Exodus 5:8
And the tale of the brickes which they did make heretofore, you shall lay vpon them: you shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us goe and sacrifice to our God. Exodus 5:8 (KJV)
In response to the accusation, Pharaoh intensifies the burden by maintaining the same brick quota while removing the straw that had previously been provided. The specific instruction to the taskmasters is echoed in the concise quotation, “You shall not diminish any portion thereof; you shall lay upon them the same task of making bricks as before.” By keeping the quota unchanged and eliminating the straw, Pharaoh makes the labor far more arduous.
The Israelites react to this increased oppression by crying out to God, expressing their desire to go and sacrifice to Him. Their lament reflects a longing for deliverance from Pharaoh’s tyranny and the freedom to worship their God.
Several key themes emerge from this passage. First, the Cost of Obedience is evident: Moses and Aaron obey God’s command to approach Pharaoh, yet their obedience does not bring immediate relief; instead, it leads to greater suffering for the people. This reminds believers that following God’s instructions may invite opposition and hardship, but trust in His greater plan remains essential.
Second, Perseverance in the Face of Opposition is demonstrated by the Israelites’ continued cry to God despite the intensified workload. Their resilience shows that true allegiance lies with God rather than with earthly rulers, encouraging believers to remain steadfast amid adversity.
Finally, God’s Plan for Deliverance is foreshadowed. This moment sets the stage for the subsequent plagues and the ultimate liberation of Israel, affirming that God is aware of His people’s suffering and will act in His perfect timing to fulfill His promises.
Thus Exodus 5:8 captures a pivotal point in the narrative of Israel’s enslavement, highlighting the challenges of obedience, the necessity of perseverance, and the certainty of divine deliverance.
