Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And Amram took him Jochebed his father’s sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years.”

Context:Exodus is the second book of the Bible and primarily focuses on the story of Moses and the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. In this verse, we are introduced to Amram, who is the father of Moses and Aaron.

Amram and Jochebed:Amram was the son of Kohath, a grandson of Levi, and a member of the tribe of Levi. He married his father’s sister, Jochebed, making her Moses and Aaron’s mother. This marriage occurred during a time when the Israelites were living in Egypt under oppressive conditions.

The significance of Amram and Jochebed:Amram and Jochebed played a crucial role in the Exodus story. Their union resulted in the birth of two significant figures in Israelite history: Aaron, who became the first high priest, and Moses, who would become the great deliverer and leader of the Israelites.

The age of Amram:According to Exodus 6:20, Amram lived to be 137 years old. While this detail may not appear significant on its own, it emphasizes the longevity of Amram’s life and highlights the genealogical lineage of Moses and Aaron.

Family and God’s plan:Through the marriage of Amram and Jochebed, God’s plan for the liberation of the Israelites began to unfold. Their children, Moses and Aaron, would become instrumental in leading the Israelites out of Egypt and guiding them towards the Promised Land.

Lessons from the verse:Exodus 6:20 demonstrates God’s providence and sovereignty in orchestrating the events of history. Despite the harsh circumstances of slavery and oppression, God used the marriage of Amram and Jochebed to bring forth the leaders who would fulfill His purposes.

Family and faithfulness:The commitment and faithfulness of Amram and Jochebed in raising Moses and Aaron serve as an inspiration. Their obedience to God’s plan, even in difficult times, played a vital role in shaping the destiny of the Israelite nation.

In summary, Exodus 6:20 introduces us to Amram, the father of Moses and Aaron, and highlights the significance of their family lineage in the Exodus narrative. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty, the importance of family, and the role of faithful individuals in fulfilling His purposes.
