Exodus 6:21

And the sons of Izhar; Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri.

Exodus 6:21 (KJV)

Exodus is the second book of the Bible and tells how God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt. This verse belongs to a family record of Levi’s descendants, the tribe from which Moses and Aaron came. Izhar was a son of Kohath, who was a son of Levi. So Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri were Levites of the Kohathite branch.

Genealogies in Scripture are not empty lists. They preserve history, trace important family lines, and confirm legal and religious rights. Here the record establishes the priestly lineage of Moses and Aaron and places these three men within that sacred family. This genealogy also sets the stage for events that follow in Israel’s story.

The verse names three sons of Izhar: Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri. Korah appears later as a leading figure in a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, as recorded in Numbers 16. The other two brothers are not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, and their lives remain hidden from us. Their inclusion shows that every person in God’s record matters, even when we know little about them.

Korah’s later rebellion is the clearest connection. He challenged the authority God had given to Moses and Aaron, and his story warns against resisting God-ordained leadership. The genealogy also reminds us that God works through real human history, including the failures of individuals. Korah’s presence in this list does not erase his later sin, yet it shows that God’s purposes continue through imperfect people. Even a brief record like this is part of God’s inspired Word and contains lessons for our instruction.

This brief record teaches us to respect the leaders God places over us. Korah’s example warns that pride and envy can lead to ruin. At the same time, the verse encourages us to trust God’s choices. He appointed Moses and Aaron for their tasks, and He appoints each believer for specific roles today.

The three brothers had different paths. Korah became notorious, while Nepheg and Zichri remained obscure. This variety reminds us that within one family, people receive different callings. Our worth does not depend on fame or visible success. Faithful service in a quiet role is just as valuable in God’s eyes.

God values the details of our lives enough to record them. Even a short genealogy carries meaning and instruction. Consider your own place in God’s family. Whether your name is widely known or known only to Him, He sees you and has a purpose for you. Let this verse encourage you to walk humbly, obey God’s order, and trust that He writes every faithful life into His story.
