Exodus 6:22
And the sons of Uzziel; Mishael, and Elzaphan, and Zithri.
Exodus 6:22 (KJV)
Context
In Exodus, the Israelites suffered under Pharaoh’s oppression in Egypt. God chose Moses to lead them out, but Pharaoh refused to let the people go. Exodus 6 records the genealogy of Moses and Aaron, tracing their ancestry to Levi.
Meaning
Uzziel was a son of Kohath, who was a son of Levi. This verse lists Uzziel’s three sons: Mishael, Elzaphan, and Zithri. These men were Levites of the Kohathite branch, set apart for service to God. Their names show the historical reality of the priestly families and God’s care in preserving them.
Mishael is distinct from the Mishael of Daniel 1:6, who was renamed Meshach in Babylon. These are two different individuals with the same name.
Elzaphan later became a leader of the Levites (Numbers 3:30) and had duties regarding the tabernacle (Numbers 4:16). Zithri is mentioned less often, but his inclusion shows the continuity of the Levitical line.
Biblical connections
Two of Uzziel’s sons, Mishael and Elzaphan, appear in Leviticus 10:4, when Moses called them to carry the bodies of Nadab and Abihu out of the camp. Those two sons of Aaron had offered unauthorized fire before the Lord. This event shows that these names are linked to serious lessons about worshiping God on His own terms.
Application
God works through real families and knows every name. The Levites were set apart for faithful service, and their example encourages believers to serve God’s people with reverence and obedience.
Reflection
Even a brief list of names reminds us that God orders His people carefully. Every person has a place in His plan, and faithful service matters to Him.
