Exodus 6:24

And the sons of Korah; Assir, and Elkanah, and Abiasaph: these are the families of the Korhites.

Exodus 6:24 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a genealogy in Exodus 6, placed within the account of God commissioning Moses and Aaron to lead Israel out of Egypt. The list traces the Levite line, giving special attention to Aaron’s priestly family. It appears just after God reassures Moses of His covenant and His name, Yahweh, promising deliverance.

The verse names Korah’s three sons: Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph. They became the heads of the Korahite families, a branch of the Kohathite Levites. Their listing here establishes their place in Israel’s tribal and worship structure. This genealogical record is not merely a list of names; it preserves the legitimate priestly lineage and the organizational framework for worship.

Korah himself led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, as recorded in Numbers 16. Yet his descendants continued as a priestly family. Several psalms, including Psalms 42, 44–49, 84–85, and 87–88, are attributed to the sons of Korah, showing their later role in temple music and liturgy. This connection shows God’s grace at work through a flawed family line. Despite Korah’s severe failure, his descendants remained prominent within the Levitical priesthood, demonstrating the continuity of God’s covenant promises through specific family lines.

Genealogies remind readers that God works through real families and historical events. Even when human failure marks a heritage, God can redeem and use descendants for His purposes. The Korahites’ service in worship encourages believers that past failure does not remove a person or family from God’s plan. God’s redemptive plan unfolds through imperfect human history, and He can repurpose even the most difficult legacies for His glory.

This brief record invites gratitude for God’s faithfulness across generations. It also calls readers to honor their spiritual heritage while trusting that God’s grace can transform even difficult legacies into instruments of praise.
