Exodus 6:25

And Eleazar Aaron’s son took him one of the daughters of Putiel to wife; and she bare him Phinehas: these are the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families.

Exodus 6:25 (KJV)

The book of Exodus tells how God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and led them toward the Promised Land. This verse appears in a list of the Levites, the tribe set apart for priestly service. The genealogy connects the priestly line from Aaron through his son Eleazar to Eleazar’s son Phinehas.

Eleazar was Aaron’s son. Aaron, the brother of Moses, served as the first high priest and spoke for Moses before Pharaoh. As Aaron’s descendant, Eleazar held a privileged place among the Levites. He married one of the daughters of Putiel. The Bible does not identify Putiel elsewhere, so his background is uncertain. Some think he may have been an Egyptian convert, but the text does not say this. The marriage still mattered because it continued the priestly family line.

Phinehas was born from this union. He later became a leader during Israel’s wilderness journey. When the people sinned with idolatry and immorality, Phinehas acted with zeal for the Lord and stopped a plague (Numbers 25:1-15). Because of his faithfulness, God gave him a covenant of peace and an everlasting priesthood for his descendants (Numbers 25:10-13).

The verse ends by calling Eleazar, his wife, and Phinehas the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families. This means they led and represented the Levitical tribe, which cared for the tabernacle and later the temple.

This genealogy shows God’s faithfulness in preserving the priestly line. It also prepares readers for Phinehas, whose actions in Numbers 25 protect the holiness of worship. The line from Aaron to Eleazar to Phinehas shows how God worked through ordinary family life to keep His people faithful.

God often works through families and everyday choices. A marriage, a birth, and a faithful act can shape the future of His people. Believers today can trust that God sees their family lines and uses them for His purposes, even when details remain unknown.

This verse reminds us that God values faithful service across generations. Like Phinehas, believers are called to act with wholehearted devotion to God, knowing that He honors those who honor Him.
