Exodus 6:26

Listen to this article

“These are that Aaron and Moses, to whom the Lord said, Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies.”

Context:The book of Exodus chronicles the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and their journey towards the Promised Land. In this verse, the focus is on Aaron and Moses, the two key figures through whom God worked to deliver His people.

Aaron and Moses:Aaron and Moses were brothers, and both were chosen by God for significant roles in the liberation of the Israelites. Moses was called to be the primary leader and spokesperson for the Israelites, while Aaron was appointed as Moses’ assistant and the high priest. Together, they played vital roles in leading the people out of Egypt and guiding them towards the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Divine Appointment:Exodus 6:26 emphasises that God specifically appointed Aaron and Moses for the task of bringing the children of Israel out of Egypt. It highlights God’s sovereignty and His active involvement in selecting individuals to carry out His purposes. The phrase “to whom the Lord said” underscores the divine calling and the authority with which Moses and Aaron were entrusted.

Bringing out the children of Israel:The primary objective of Aaron and Moses’ mission was to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt. This involved confronting Pharaoh, the Egyptian ruler, with the demand to release the Israelites from slavery. Through a series of plagues and miraculous signs, God demonstrated His power and compelled Pharaoh to let the people go.

According to their armies:The verse mentions that the children of Israel were to be brought out from Egypt “according to their armies.” This phrase refers to the organisation of the Israelites into groups or tribes, each with its own tribal leaders and military arrangements. God’s plan was not merely to rescue a disorganised multitude, but to lead a structured community prepared for the challenges of the wilderness and the eventual conquest of Canaan.

Application:Exodus 6:26 reminds us of God’s faithfulness in choosing and equipping individuals for specific purposes. It emphasises that God’s plans are executed through human agents, and He calls and empowers people according to His divine will. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s leading and to be willing vessels for His work, knowing that He equips and guides those He calls.

In summary, Exodus 6:26 highlights the divine appointment of Aaron and Moses to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt. It emphasises God’s sovereignty in selecting individuals for His purposes and reminds us of His faithfulness in equipping those He calls.
