Exodus 10:20

Listen to this article

“But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go.”

This verse is a part of the narrative in the book of Exodus that describes the ten plagues that God brought upon Egypt to secure the liberation of the Israelites from slavery. In this particular context, the eighth plague, the plague of locusts, has just occurred.

Historical Background:At the time of this event, the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt under Pharaoh’s rule. God had sent Moses as His chosen instrument to lead the Israelites out of bondage and into the Promised Land.

Pharaoh’s Heart Hardened:In this verse, it is stated that the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, causing him to refuse to release the Israelites. This hardening of Pharaoh’s heart is a recurring theme throughout the narrative of the Exodus.

The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart can be understood in two ways:

  • Judicial Hardening: Pharaoh’s heart was already hardened through his own stubbornness and refusal to acknowledge God’s power and authority. In response to Pharaoh’s initial resistance, God allowed Pharaoh’s heart to be hardened even further, reinforcing his own decision.
  • Active Intervention by God: Additionally, the verse suggests that the Lord was actively involved in hardening Pharaoh’s heart. God allowed Pharaoh to experience the full consequences of his rebellion, withholding His grace and mercy.

It is important to note that Pharaoh also played an active role in hardening his heart. In earlier plagues, Pharaoh had been given opportunities to repent and let the Israelites go, but he persisted in his defiance.

Divine Purpose:The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart served a significant purpose in God’s plan. Through the plagues and Pharaoh’s stubbornness, God demonstrated His sovereignty, power, and authority over Egypt’s false gods and rulers. The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart allowed for the complete display of God’s wonders and judgments upon Egypt, leading to the eventual liberation of the Israelites.

Lessons for us:

  • God’s Sovereignty:Exodus 10:20 reminds us of God’s supreme authority over human hearts and His ability to use even hardened hearts to accomplish His purposes.
  • Free Will and Responsibility:Pharaoh had a choice to make, but his persistent rebellion against God ultimately led to his downfall. This emphasizes the importance of recognizing and responding to God’s call for repentance and obedience when He speaks to our hearts.
  • God’s Faithfulness:Despite Pharaoh’s resistance, God remained faithful to His promises to deliver the Israelites. This serves as a reminder that God is faithful to His people even in the midst of challenging circumstances.
  • Trust in God’s Timing:The prolonged process of the plagues and the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart teach us the importance of patience and trusting in God’s timing. God’s plan unfolds according to His perfect wisdom, and His deliverance will come at the appointed time.

In summary, Exodus 10:20 illustrates the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart, both as a consequence of his own stubbornness and as an act of divine intervention. This event serves as a testament to God’s sovereignty, His faithfulness to His promises, and the importance of our own response to His call.
