Exodus 14:11

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?”

Context:Exodus 14 is a pivotal chapter in the book of Exodus. It describes the events following the Israelites’ departure from Egypt after enduring slavery and witnessing the ten plagues. God led them through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. In this particular verse, the Israelites are confronted with the Red Sea before them and the approaching Egyptian army behind them. Fear and doubt start to arise among the Israelites, and they express their complaints to Moses.

The Israelites’ Fear and Doubt:The Israelites’ question to Moses reflects their fear, doubt, and frustration. They wondered why Moses led them into the wilderness, seemingly setting them up for their demise. They were afraid of dying in the wilderness and believed they would have been better off staying in Egypt, even as slaves. Their immediate circumstances overwhelmed them, causing them to doubt God’s purpose and Moses’ leadership.

Lack of Trust:The Israelites’ reaction highlights their lack of trust in God’s faithfulness and deliverance. They failed to remember God’s promises and the miraculous signs they had witnessed in Egypt. Despite experiencing the plagues and being set free from slavery, they quickly lost sight of God’s power and doubted His ability to protect them in this critical moment.

Lessons for us:

  • Trusting in God’s Promises:This passage reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s promises, even when circumstances seem dire. The Israelites’ fear and doubt blinded them to God’s faithfulness. We should strive to remember God’s faithfulness throughout our lives and hold onto His promises, knowing that He is always with us, even in challenging times.
  • Patience and Faith:The Israelites’ impatience and lack of faith caused them to panic and question Moses’ leadership. Similarly, in our lives, we may face difficulties or delays that test our patience and faith. It is crucial to remember that God works in His perfect timing and to remain steadfast in our trust in Him.
  • Gratitude and Contentment:The Israelites’ complaints reveal a lack of gratitude for the deliverance they had already experienced. It is a reminder for us to cultivate a spirit of gratitude, even in challenging circumstances. Rather than focusing on what we lack or the difficulties we face, we should express gratitude for God’s provision and faithfulness in our lives.
  • Seeking God’s Guidance:When faced with challenges, it is essential to seek God’s guidance and trust in His wisdom. The Israelites failed to turn to God in their moment of doubt but instead directed their complaints at Moses. We should seek God’s counsel through prayer, study of His Word, and seeking wise counsel from fellow believers.

In conclusion, Exodus 14:11 serves as a reminder of the Israelites’ lack of trust in God’s faithfulness and their tendency to complain and doubt during difficult times. This passage encourages us to trust in God’s promises, exercise patience and faith, cultivate gratitude and contentment, and seek God’s guidance in all circumstances.
