Listen to this article

And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lift vp their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them, and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel lift vp their eyes, and beholde, the Egyptians marched after them, and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out vnto the Lord. Exodus 14:10 (KJV)

Exodus 14 is a pivotal chapter in the book of Exodus. It records the Israelites’ escape from Egypt under Moses after generations of bondage. In this verse the people find themselves in a perilous situation: Pharaoh’s army is pursuing them while the Red Sea lies before them, offering no apparent way of escape.

Fear and Desperation: The children of Israel lift their eyes and see the Egyptians advancing. Their immediate reaction is terror; they are “sore afraid.” Trapped between a hostile army and the vast sea, their fear is understandable given the overwhelming circumstances.

Crying Out to the Lord: In their distress the Israelites cry out to the Lord for help. This response reveals the depth of their faith and dependence on God. Even amid panic they turn to Him, acknowledging that only His intervention can rescue them from their enemies.

Trusting in God’s Deliverance: Their cry demonstrates confidence in God’s power to save. Though the situation appears hopeless from a human perspective, they trust in God’s faithfulness and the promises He made to deliver them from bondage. This moment highlights their reliance on divine provision and the expectation that He will act on their behalf.

Application: Exodus 14:10 reminds believers to trust God in overwhelming circumstances. When we feel trapped or pursued by difficulties, we are called to lift our eyes to the Lord, cry out to Him, and place our trust in His strength. God is our refuge and strength; He hears our prayers and provides a way out, even when the path seems impossible.

In summary, the verse portrays the Israelites’ fear and desperation as the Egyptian army closes in, yet it also showcases their faith as they cry to the Lord. Their example urges us to turn to God in trouble, trusting in His power and provision to guide us forward.
