Exodus 15:12

Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.

Exodus 15:12 (KJV)

Exodus 15 records the song of Moses and the Israelites after God delivered them from the pursuing Egyptian army at the Red Sea. This song is often called the “Song of Moses” or the “Song of Miriam.” It is a poetic expression of praise and thanksgiving for God’s mighty act of salvation.

In this verse, Moses acknowledges God’s power, who stretched out His right hand to save Israel. The right hand is a poetic image of strength and authority, showing that God alone accomplished the deliverance. The phrase “the earth swallowed them” describes the fate of Pharaoh and his host. Though they drowned in the sea, the sea is part of the earth, so they are pictured as being swallowed by the ground. This poetic language emphasizes the completeness of their defeat and the totality of God’s judgment. The victory was total; the enemy was completely overwhelmed and consumed by the earth.

This verse connects to Jonah 2:6, where Jonah, in the deep, says the earth with its bars was about him. Both passages use the image of the earth swallowing to describe being overwhelmed by water, showing God’s control over the depths. Here, that control brings both salvation for Israel and destruction for their enemies. The same power that parted the sea also closed it over the Egyptian army.

Exodus 15:12 encourages believers to trust in God’s power and deliverance. It reminds us that God can rescue us from our enemies and overcome any obstacle. Just as God saved the Israelites from the Egyptians, He can deliver us from sin, Satan, and the trials we face. We can find comfort and strength in knowing that God fights on our behalf. His power is decisive, and He is worthy of our trust in every situation.

God’s victory is decisive and complete. The same hand that saves His people also judges those who oppose Him. This verse calls us to praise Him for His mighty acts, trusting that His power is sufficient for every challenge we face.
