Exodus 15:15

Listen to this article

“Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.”

Context:Exodus 15 is a song of victory and praise to God after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea and witnessed the destruction of the Egyptian army. Moses and the children of Israel sang this song, acknowledging God’s power and deliverance.

Edom, Moab, and Canaan:In this verse, these three nations are mentioned in connection with the fear and trembling that will come upon them. The dukes of Edom refer to the leaders or nobles of the nation of Edom, descendants of Esau, who were known for their strength. The mighty men of Moab represent the warriors of Moab, a neighbouring nation to the east of Israel. The inhabitants of Canaan refer to the people living in the Promised Land, whom the Israelites would soon encounter.

Amazement, trembling, and melting away:These descriptive phrases convey the emotions and reactions of the surrounding nations upon hearing about the miraculous deliverance of the Israelites. The dukes of Edom will be amazed, recognising the power of the God of Israel. The mighty men of Moab will tremble, experiencing fear and trepidation. All the inhabitants of Canaan will melt away, suggesting a state of complete terror and loss of strength in the face of the Israelites’ triumph.

Significance:This verse highlights the awe‑inspiring impact of God’s deliverance and intervention. The victory over Egypt not only affected the Egyptians but also caused neighbouring nations to take notice. The reputation of the God of Israel as a mighty and powerful deity spread, and it created a sense of fear and vulnerability among those who heard about the event.
