Exodus 15:15

Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

Exodus 15:15 (KJV)

Exodus 15 records the song Moses and Israel sang after crossing the Red Sea and seeing the Egyptian army destroyed. This verse names three nations that would hear of that event and respond with fear.

The dukes of Edom are the leaders of Esau’s descendants, a people known for strength. The mighty men of Moab are the warriors of a nation east of Israel. The inhabitants of Canaan are the people living in the land Israel would soon enter.

Each phrase pictures a different reaction to the report of God’s power. Edom’s leaders are amazed, struck with terror. Moab’s warriors tremble, seized by shaking. Canaan’s people melt away, losing all courage. These are not ordinary fears but a dread that comes from recognizing divine power at work for Israel.

This fear directly answers the report of God’s acts in the Exodus and at the Red Sea. It also fulfills God’s promise to make Israel feared among the nations, preparing the way for their entry into Canaan, where these peoples would be disheartened.

God’s deliverance of Israel did not stay hidden. The news spread, and surrounding nations felt vulnerable. When God acts for His people, His reputation goes before them, and no enemy can stand against what He has done.

God’s sovereignty over all nations brings comfort. The same power that made Edom, Moab, and Canaan tremble still protects His people today. This verse reminds us that God’s mighty acts are not only for our benefit but also serve as a witness to the world, demonstrating His unmatched power and faithfulness.
