Exodus 16:20
Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.
Exodus 16:20 (KJV)
Context
Exodus 16 records the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness about a month after their escape from Egypt. Facing hunger, they complained, and God promised bread from heaven, called manna. Through Moses, God commanded each household to gather only enough for that day, trusting Him for the next. This daily test was meant to teach dependence on God’s faithful care.
Meaning
In this verse, some Israelites ignored Moses’ instruction and kept manna overnight. The result was immediate: it bred worms and stank, becoming unfit to eat. This was not a random accident but a direct consequence of disobedience. The decay made visible the spiritual decay of distrust. Moses’ anger reflected righteous indignation, for the people had rejected God’s clear command delivered through His appointed leader. Their action revealed a heart that doubted God’s promise to provide each morning.
Biblical connections
The manna itself points to Christ, the true bread from heaven, who gives eternal life to those who receive Him by faith. Just as manna was to be gathered fresh each day, believers are to feed on Christ daily through His word and Spirit. The corruption of stored manna shows the insufficiency of human effort to preserve what God intends to be received fresh. Jesus taught His disciples to pray for daily bread in Matthew 6:11, emphasizing the same dependence on God’s provision. This principle runs throughout Scripture, calling God’s people to trust Him one day at a time.
Application
This account warns against the subtle sin of unbelief that leads to practical disobedience. The Israelites’ hoarding revealed a lack of trust in God’s promise to provide each morning. Believers today may do the same when they worry about the future, rely on their own methods of security, or ignore God’s instructions. God’s commands are given for our good, and obedience brings blessing, while disobedience brings consequences. The lesson is not merely about manna but about the posture of the heart toward God’s word and His promises. When we try to secure tomorrow through our own efforts, we often end up with corruption and loss.
Reflection
Examine areas where you may be trying to secure tomorrow through your own efforts rather than trusting God’s daily care. Are you holding onto what God has told you to release? The immediate, physical result of worms and stench made the lesson unforgettable, teaching that God’s word is reliable and that He will not be mocked. He calls you to live one day at a time, receiving His provision with gratitude and obedience. When you obey His voice, you demonstrate love and reverence for Him, and you experience the peace that comes from resting in His faithful care.
