Exodus 16:21

And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

Exodus 16:21 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the wilderness journey of Israel after their escape from Egypt. In the Wilderness of Sin, the people were hungry and complained to Moses and Aaron. God answered by sending manna, a bread-like substance from heaven, to feed them each day. This was not a one-time miracle but a daily gift, repeated every morning for the whole journey.

The phrase “they gathered it every morning” shows that God gave the manna daily, and the people had to collect it early. Each person took only what his household needed for that day. The second half of the verse, “and when the sun waxed hot, it melted,” teaches that leftover manna did not last. It could not be stored for the future. This daily rhythm forced Israel to trust God afresh every morning rather than rely on their own supplies. The melting in the sun also made clear that God’s provision was timely, not meant for hoarding.

God later explained that He tested Israel to see whether they would walk in His law (Exodus 16:4). The instruction to gather only enough for the day was a test of obedience. The apostle Paul refers to this event to teach about equality and dependence on God (2 Corinthians 8:15), showing that no one had too much or too little. This pattern of daily trust appears throughout Scripture, reminding believers that God cares for His people in every season.

This verse calls us to depend on God daily. Just as the manna melted in the sun, our own resources and past blessings cannot carry us into tomorrow. We must come to God each morning for fresh strength, wisdom, and provision. Gathering early also reminds us to seek Him before the busyness of the day takes over. Each day brings its own needs, and God promises to meet them as they come.

God’s care is faithful and consistent, even in difficult places. The manna was a visible sign of His presence with His people. When we face our own wilderness seasons, we can trust that He who provided for Israel will also provide for us, one day at a time. This steady, daily provision builds our faith and teaches us to rely on Him completely.
