Exodus 16:22

And it came to passe that on the sixt day they gathered twice as much bread, two Omers for one man: and all the rulers of the Congregation came and told Moses. Exodus 16:22 (KJV)

Exodus 16 records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their deliverance from Egyptian slavery. While camped in the desert of Sin, the people began to grumble against Moses and Aaron, longing for the food they had in Egypt. In response to their complaints, God provided manna—a miraculous, bread‑like substance—from heaven, and also sent quails for meat.

God’s Provision: In verse 22 we see God’s faithful provision and the fulfillment of His promise. On the sixth day the Israelites gathered twice as much bread—two omers for each person—enough to sustain them for two days. Throughout their wilderness wanderings God continually supplied manna to meet their needs, demonstrating His care for His chosen nation.

Lesson: God is our Provider. He knows our needs and, just as He provided for the Israelites, He will provide for us in our times of need. We can trust in His faithfulness and rely on Him for our daily sustenance.

The Sabbath Rest: The surplus of bread was reported to Moses, and he instructed the people to rest on the seventh day. This event highlights the significance of the Sabbath as a day set apart for rest, worship, and remembrance of God’s provision.

Lesson: While New Testament believers are not bound by the ceremonial Sabbath regulations, the principle of regularly setting aside time for rest, worship, and reflection remains relevant. We should prioritize such times to deepen our relationship with God.

Trust and Obedience: God commanded the Israelites to gather only what was needed each day, except on the day before the Sabbath when they were to collect enough for two days. Those who tried to hoard the manna found it rotted and filled with worms, illustrating the consequences of disobedience.

Lesson: The manna episode teaches the importance of trusting God’s daily provision and obeying His instructions. Our dependence on Him should be expressed through faithful obedience, knowing He will meet our needs in His perfect timing.

Application: Reflect on God’s faithfulness in providing for your needs throughout life and give thanks for His continual provision. Set aside regular periods of rest, worship, and reflection to draw closer to Him. Practice trust and obedience daily, relying on God’s guidance and provision in every circumstance.
