Exodus 17:6

Posted on 4 August 2023
Listen to this article

“Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”

Context:Exodus 17:6 is part of the narrative of the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness after their liberation from slavery in Egypt. The Israelites had been traveling for some time and were facing a severe water shortage. They complained to Moses, and God instructed him to strike a particular rock in Horeb to provide water for the people.

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s Provision:The miraculous provision of water from the rock demonstrates God’s faithfulness and His ability to meet the needs of His people even in the most challenging circumstances. It reminds us that God is our ultimate source of sustenance and that He cares for our physical needs.
  • The Rock:The rock in this passage symbolizes Christ. In 1 Corinthians 10:4, the Apostle Paul refers to this event as a type of Christ, highlighting that the rock was Christ. Just as the rock provided water to quench the Israelites’ physical thirst, Jesus provides living water to quench our spiritual thirst (John 4:14). It signifies that our spiritual sustenance and refreshment come through a personal relationship with Jesus.
  • Striking the Rock:Moses was instructed to strike the rock to bring forth water. In a spiritual sense, this action can be seen as a foreshadowing of Christ being smitten and crucified on the cross. Through His sacrificial death, Jesus provided a way for humanity to access the spiritual blessings and eternal life. It reminds us that our salvation and access to God’s blessings are made possible through Christ’s sacrifice.
  • Faith and Obedience:Moses faithfully obeyed God’s command by striking the rock, even in the midst of the people’s complaints and doubts. This demonstrates the importance of faith and obedience in our relationship with God. When we trust and obey God, even when things seem difficult, He can work miracles in our lives and meet our needs.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Provision:The passage encourages us to trust in God’s provision in our lives. Just as He provided water from the rock, He can provide for our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. We should seek Him and rely on Him, knowing that He is faithful to provide what is best for us.
  • Jesus as the Source of Living Water:We are reminded that Jesus is the source of living water. As we develop a personal relationship with Him, through faith in His sacrificial death and resurrection, we can experience His spiritual refreshment, eternal life, and the transformation of our lives.
  • Faith and Obedience:Like Moses, we are called to trust and obey God, even when faced with challenging circumstances. Our faith and obedience open the way for God to work in and through us, bringing about His miraculous interventions and blessings.

In summary, Exodus 17:6 showcases God’s provision for the Israelites in the wilderness through the water that flowed from the rock. It also points to Jesus as the ultimate source of spiritual refreshment and emphasizes the importance of faith and obedience in our relationship with God.
