Exodus 17:5
And the Lord said vnto Moses, Goe on before the people, and take with thee of the Elders of Israel: and thy rod wherewith thou smotest the riuer, take in thine hand, and goe. Exodus 17:5 (KJV)

As Moses took the rod and went before the people, God performed another miracle. Verse 6 tells us that Moses was to strike the rock at Horeb, and water would come out for the people to drink.
