Exodus 19:9

Posted on 4 August 2023
Listen to this article

"And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee and believe thee forever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD."

This verse is part of the narrative in the book of Exodus where God is speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, preparing the Israelites for the giving of the Ten Commandments and establishing His covenant with them.

Here are some key points to consider in this verse:

  • Divine Communication:The verse begins with God speaking to Moses. The Lord declares His intention to come to Moses in a thick cloud. This shows the extraordinary way in which God chose to communicate with His chosen leader, Moses. God often used supernatural means, such as clouds, to manifest His presence and communicate with His people throughout the Old Testament.
  • Revelation and Faith:God’s purpose in coming in a thick cloud was twofold. Firstly, it was to ensure that the people could hear when He spoke with Moses. By making His presence known in this powerful manner, God desired to grab their attention and make them aware that something significant was about to happen. Secondly, God’s aim was for the people to believe Moses forever. By revealing Himself in such a dramatic fashion, God sought to establish Moses’ credibility and authority as His chosen spokesperson. The miraculous signs and wonders accompanying Moses’ ministry would confirm his role as a divinely appointed leader.
  • Intermediary Role of Moses:The latter part of the verse highlights Moses’ role as a mediator between God and the people. Moses relayed the words of the people to the Lord, serving as an intercessor and communicator on their behalf. Moses had a unique position of intimacy with God, acting as a bridge between the Israelites and the divine presence.

Overall, Exodus 19:9 demonstrates God’s desire to communicate with His people in a remarkable and unmistakable way. Through the use of a thick cloud, God ensured that His voice would be heard, and Moses would be recognized as His chosen leader. It also highlights the role of Moses as an intermediary between God and the people, reflecting the importance of having a faithful and obedient leader who can effectively convey God’s message.

By studying this verse and its surrounding context, we gain insights into God’s character, His desire for communication, and the significance of faithful leadership in the unfolding of His divine plan.
