Isaiah 52 begins with a call to wake up and shake off the dust, as God’s people are urged to put on their beautiful garments and prepare for redemption. Jerusalem, the holy city, is told to rise from its ruins and be free from captivity. The Lord promises to reveal His glory and deliver His people.
The chapter then highlights the return of the exiled Israelites from Babylon. They are encouraged to leave with joy and not fear, for the Lord goes before them and will be their rear guard. The whole world is urged to witness God’s salvation and praise Him.
The text declares the future exaltation of the suffering Servant, who will be marred and disfigured but ultimately be exalted and highly esteemed by many. This servant’s mission is to cleanse the nations and bring them to God.
Isaiah 52 ends with a call for God’s people to depart from Babylon and not touch any unclean thing. They are instructed to be clean and pure as they carry the vessels of the Lord. The promise is made that the Lord Himself will go before them and protect them.
