Ezekiel 42 describes the chambers surrounding the inner court of the temple. The prophet is taken by an angel to a north-facing gate, where he sees chambers on the outer court’s north side. These chambers are aligned in three levels, each increasing in size. The chambers on the upper levels have walkways in front of them, while those on the lower level do not. The walls of the chambers become thicker as they ascend, allowing the rooms to be stacked without entering the sacred area. Each level has a passageway connecting the chambers. The width of the chambers varies, with wider ones on the higher levels.
The angel informs Ezekiel that these chambers are for the priests who minister in the temple. They are to keep holy garments and offer sacrifices for the people. The priests should not defile the sacred areas by entering the outer court with their garments on, but they can change their clothes in the designated chambers.
